Mission and Pacific Beaches in California - Crucial Travel Facts

When I lived in San Diego, hardly a week passed without visiting Mission or Pacific beaches. It is a great place for people watching and more. But, before you jump in the car or plane, let me share some local insight with you.
Mission Beach
This small 2-mile long community was literally built on a sandbar nestled between Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The beach is home to San Diego's famed beachfront amusement park and entertainment center, Belmont Park. There, your family can enjoy mini-golf, an arcade and midway style games, or ride on one of the West Coast's original oceanfront roller coasters - The Giant Dipper Roller Coaster. Built in 1925, it is one of the only remaining wood roller coasters in use. Most visitors are local college or university students. Its not uncommon for television and radio stations to hold remote broadcasts during Spring Break. In addition, local residents and tourists enjoy bicycling, skateboarding, or walking on the well-maintained lengthy boardwalk.
Pacific Beach
If you spot a charming pier with blue-roofed cottages, you found "PB's" Crystal Pier. The street that exits Crystal Pier is Garnett Street. And that's where you'll find the best taverns and bars for a memorable boys or girls night out. There is shopping too at nearby new wave and brand name stores. But one of my favorite things is simply grabbing a cup of Joe at sunrise and watching the waves undulate as I sit on one of the many benches overlooking the sea.
Crime
Both Mission beach and Pacific Beach neighborhoods are located in the 92109 zip code. The neighborhoods merge due west of Sea World, about 10 miles from downtown San Diego.
In 2010, the 92109 zip code had a population of 45,302. Research indicates that nineteen (19) sex offenders were living in the 92109 zip code area. The San Diego Police Department reports that Pacific beach had 115 violent crimes and 678 property crimes during the first six (6) months of 2010. On the other hand, Mission Beach only had 18 violent crimes and 137 property crimes during the same reporting period.
